Sunday was a dark day in the Ghana Premier League as a staunch Kotoko fan and communicator Nana Pooley was stabbed 5 times on his left chest leading to his unfortunate death in a premier League match between Kotoko and Nsoatreman.
Pooley’s death has led to the halt of all football activities in Ghana as the Ghana Football Association has announced.
Sudanese head coach James Kwesi Appiah is an Interim Management Committee Member of the Porcupine Warriors was part of the club’s delegation that made the long trip from Kumasi to Nsoatre for the game. The veteran football brain witnessed everything that led to the exchange of blows by the players and the what led to Pooley’s death.
“They told us they would bring 120 police officers, but the number of officers present was not even up to 20. Ahead of the game, Nsoatreman promised Asan te Kotoko that they were going fill the venue with more than 120 police officers but ultimately deceived the Porcupine Warriors with less than 20 security officers.
Tension has been at all time high ahead of the game because Nsoatreman fans had once warned Pooley to not step a foot in the Nsoatre town because he has once disrespected them.
“Secondly, when the scuffle happened on the pitch, calm was restored. On what basis did the referee give Kotoko two red cards while Nsoatreman received only one? Both teams’ players were involved in the fight, so how is that fair?”
The game was marred with a huge fight between the players with some entourage of Nsoatre stepping on the pitch to join their players attack Asante Kotoko’s players. The game ended with Asnate Kotoko having only 9 men as Nostreman also ended the match with 10 men.
“The MP asked me to go and calm the fans down, but it was his supporters causing the trouble, and we were outnumbered. The Kotoko fans at the VIP section said, ‘No, we won’t let you go because it’s risky. I even got hit by a sachet of water in the process.
Kwesi Appiah’s attack was extremely disappointing by Nsoatreman fans with only the intervention of former Sunyani West’s MP, Baffour Awuah, calming things down.
“It was only after that incident that the former minister intervened and told the fans to stop, and they finally did. As soon as they stopped, I left the stadium and did not watch the game again. What we didn’t know at the time was that the same men who earlier wanted to take Pooley away were waiting for him at the entrance.”
Kwesi Appiah revealed that he left the venue because they entourage of Kotoko had been threatened to by some men and these men later met Pooley and attacked him with knife.
Nsoatreman FC withdrew from the Ghana Premier League on Monday morning after the owner Baffour Awuah was accused of ordering his men to attack Pooley.
