Former Ghana Football Association (GFA) President Kwesi Nyantakyi has initiated a defamation lawsuit against journalist Dan Kweku Yeboah and his media organization, Peace FM, alongside Pulse Ghana and GhanaWeb.
He is seeking 10 million cedis in damages following allegations made by Yeboah claiming that Nyantakyi embezzled $2 million from the GFA.
Nyantakyi, who previously served as a FIFA Council Member, asserts that the allegations lack any factual basis and characterizes them as “reckless and defamatory.”
The lawsuit specifically highlights that other media outlets amplified Yeboah’s claims without verifying the information, contributing to the alleged defamation.
In the legal documents filed, Nyantakyi claims that these media entities published statements accusing him of theft from the GFA’s accounts, which have severely damaged his reputation.
The lawsuit references Yeboah’s statement that Nyantakyi “went to Unibank and withdrew GFA’s two million dollars and embezzled or misappropriated it for his personal benefit.”
Nyantakyi’s legal team argues that Yeboah’s remarks were not only false but also maliciously intended to tarnish his image, leading to public distress and professional harm.
The lawsuit describes the statements as “wicked, malicious, and deliberate falsehoods” that aimed to incite public hatred and diminish Nyantakyi’s standing within society.
Furthermore, the lawsuit criticizes the involved media outlets for publishing claims without proper fact-checking, labeling their actions as irresponsible journalism.
Nyantakyi is seeking not only financial compensation but also a formal retraction of the defamatory statements from the defendants.
