The Founder and Leader of the Liberal Party of Ghana (LPG), Percival Kofi Akpaloo, has been granted bail in the sum of GH¢10 million after his arrest by officials of the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) over alleged financial malfeasance.

According to Deputy Attorney-General, Justice Srem Sai, who confirmed the development in a Facebook post, Akpaloo was arrested on Wednesday, September 3, 2025, on suspicion of fraud, causing financial loss to the state, dissipation of public funds, and money laundering.

He has since been granted police bail under strict conditions, which include two sureties to be justified.

Despite the court’s decision, Akpaloo remains in EOCO custody pending the full satisfaction of the bail conditions. Investigators say probes into the allegations are still ongoing

Connection To ECG Contract

Though details of the case remain under wraps, sources close to the investigation indicate that the arrest may be linked to a controversial contract awarded by the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) years earlier.

In September 2019, ECG awarded a US$1.9 million contract under its Intensification Project to supply critical power distribution materials.

The project, aimed at expanding electricity access in peri-urban and underserved communities, involved the procurement of transformers, poles, cables, and related infrastructure.

A letter signed by then-Director of Procurement, Ing. Jacquelina Ofori-Atta, confirmed that the award—worth exactly US$1,919,780.82—was made following a competitive tender process.

However, the contract was conditional upon the successful bidder furnishing a performance security equivalent to 5% of the total contract sum within 14 days.

Sources allege that EOCO is probing whether aspects of that procurement process, and subsequent execution, were compromised, leading to losses to the state.

Political And Legal Implications

Kofi Akpaloo, who has positioned himself as an alternative voice in the political landscape, has had a controversial career marked by bold promises and financial disputes.

He contested the 2020 general elections but failed to make significant electoral gains.

His arrest now raises fresh questions about the financial dealings of smaller political parties and their leaders.

Legal experts say if the allegations are substantiated, the case could have far-reaching implications for both Akpaloo’s political future and Ghana’s anti-corruption fight.

The EOCO investigation also comes at a time when the government is under pressure to crack down on financial irregularities in state institutions and high-profile procurement contracts.

Next Steps

For now, Akpaloo’s legal team is focused on meeting the bail conditions to secure his release.

EOCO has not yet disclosed the full details of its investigation but maintains that the case is part of a broader effort to ensure accountability in public financial management.

Meanwhile, the Ministry of Justice has assured the public that due process will be followed.

“The suspect remains in the custody of EOCO pending the fulfilment of the bail conditions. Investigations are ongoing, and the law will take its course,” Deputy Attorney-General Srem Sai emphasized.

The coming weeks are expected to reveal whether the LPG leader will face formal charges in court or be cleared after investigations.
