The two political leaders have set aside their differences to celebrate a moment of national pride as the Black Stars sealed qualification for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Both President John Dramani Mahama and former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia took to social media to congratulate the team after their hard-fought 1–0 victory over Comoros at the Accra Sports Stadium on Sunday.
President Mahama, in a post on X (formerly Twitter), praised the team for bringing joy to Ghanaians and for continuing the country’s legacy on the world football stage.
“Congratulations to the senior national team, the #BlackStars. Another qualification to the World Cup. #ResettingGhana,” he wrote, commending the players and technical staff for their resilience throughout the qualifiers.
Dr. Bawumia, who served as Vice President until January 2025, also expressed excitement over Ghana’s fifth appearance at football’s most prestigious event.
“It’s FIFA World Cup number 5! Congratulations to the Black Stars for qualifying Ghana to the 2026 FIFA World Cup. We are Ghana! We are coming!” he posted, alongside images shared by FIFA and the Ghana Football Association (GFA).
The congratulatory messages from both leaders have been widely shared across social media, drawing praise for the show of unity and patriotism amid Ghana’s heated political climate.

Supporters from across the political divide have hailed the gesture as a reminder that football remains one of the few forces capable of bringing the nation together.
Sunday’s win, secured through a brilliant second-half strike by Tottenham’s Mohammed Kudus, confirmed the return to the World Cup stage after an intense qualification campaign.

The victory also marked a triumphant moment for the new technical setup and management team, who had faced criticism early in the qualifiers.
The Black Stars’ qualification comes as Ghana prepares for a major restructuring of its football administration.
The 2026 FIFA World Cup, to be jointly hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico, will feature 48 teams — the largest in the tournament’s history.
Ghana will discover its group-stage opponents when the official draw takes place on December 5, 2025.
This qualification marks Ghana’s fifth appearance at the global tournament since its debut in 2006, reaffirming the Black Stars’ status as one of Africa’s football powerhouses.
