Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta was excited to see his team beat the much more dangerous Chelsea 2-1 in the London Derby at the Emirates Stadium on Sunday afternoon.
The Gunners needed to win at all costs to extend their lead to five points, albeit with a game more played than title rivals Manchester City.
All three goals in the game came via corner kicks, with William Saliba and Jurrien Timber scoring for Arsenal, while Piero Hincapie headed in a corner kick from Chelsea’s skipper Reece James to score an own goal.
After the game, Arteta praised Chelsea’s resilience and expressed his happiness with the victory.
“Very important”. He answered when asked how important set-pieces are to his side now.
“Chelsea are the second best with one less goal, look at the talent they have,” Arteta praised Chelsea for their wonderful performance at the Emirates Stadium.
“We have lost points to long throws, lately we haven’t scored from many set-pieces. Today we did it, to have these options is great”.
Arsenal are considered the kings of set-pieces but are now in competition with Brentford and Liverpool for that title. Brentford drew 1-1 at the Brentford Community Stadium against the league leaders. They schooled Arsenal on how to use long throws and corner kicks to frustrate opponents.
Liverpool on Saturday scored three from corner kicks in the 5-2 demolition of West Ham at Anfield. Arsenal have a massive option in corner kicks, as they have scored an incredible 32 times from them.
“They can be a nightmare to defend against. On tactics boards, we can resolve any situation, but when it’s live, and they are so aggressive, pushy, effective, difficult to handle, it’s very tough,” Arteta concluded.
