Residents of Tokpo, a farming community within the Osudoku enclave of the Greater Accra Region, are reeling with shock following the sudden deployment
Residents of Tokpo, a farming community within the Osudoku enclave of the Greater Accra Region, are reeling with shock following the sudden deployment of a heavily armed military team to guard a rice farm in the area.
The unusual development has triggered widespread debate about whether the operation is a legitimate state assignment or an inappropriate use of the security apparatus to protect private business interests.
Community In Shock
According to eyewitnesses, the presence of uniformed and fully armed soldiers around the rice farm has unsettled local farmers and residents, many of whom fear intimidation.
Some community members speculate that the soldiers were deployed to prevent encroachment and theft, while others suspect the involvement of politically connected individuals leveraging state power for personal gain.
Tokpo, predominantly a rice-farming area, has long battled land disputes between local farmers, estate developers, and powerful business interests.
The sudden deployment of the military has therefore deepened suspicion that state machinery may be entangled in private conflicts.
Daniel Yeboah Raises Alarm
Social commentator and activist, Daniel Yeboah, has waded into the matter, demanding urgent clarification from President John Dramani Mahama.
He argued that the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) are constitutionally mandated to safeguard national security and territorial integrity, not to be deployed as guards for farmlands.
“The people of Tokpo and the entire Osudoku community deserve answers. Is this deployment an official state assignment or a misuse of Ghana’s military resources? President Mahama must act swiftly to address this,” Yeboah declared.
He warned that if the deployment was not sanctioned by the state, it sets a dangerous precedent where security resources are diverted to protect the interests of a few at the expense of the wider public.
Meanwhile, the residents and opinion leaders in Osudoku have appealed for transparency to calm growing anxiety in the community.
They insist that only clear communication from National Democratic Congress government and the military command can dispel fears and prevent tensions from escalating.
