The Minority Caucus in Parliament has extended its warm congratulations to former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia following his decisive victory in the New Patriotic Party (NPP) presidential primary held on Saturday January 31, 2026, officially making him the party’s flagbearer for the 2028 general elections.

In a statement issued from Parliament House in Accra and signed by Minority Leader Osahen Alexander Kwamena Afenyo-Markin, the caucus, speaking on behalf of the 87 Members of Parliament who constitute the Minority in the Ninth Parliament, praised Dr. Bawumia’s campaign as one defined by “vision, intellectual rigour and resolute commitment to Ghana’s progress.”

According to the caucus, Dr. Bawumia’s election represents a clear mandate from NPP delegates across all 276 constituencies, including participation from delegates both in Ghana and in the diaspora, reflecting strong confidence in his leadership and vision for the country’s future.

The Minority also acknowledged the competitive nature of the primary, noting that the contest featured distinguished aspirants, including Kennedy Ohene Agyapong, Dr. Bryan Acheampong, Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum, and Ing. Kwabena Agyei Agyepong.

The statement described the internal election as a robust democratic exercise, underscoring the NPP’s enduring commitment to internal democracy and the principle that every voice matters within the party’s tradition.

While admitting that the campaign period produced moments of tension and discord, the caucus stressed that such friction is inherent in competitive democratic processes and must now give way to reconciliation.

Call for Unity After 2024 Defeat

The Minority Caucus urged all party members—aspirants, supporters, delegates, and grassroots structures—to consolidate behind Dr. Bawumia’s leadership as the party prepares for the next national contest.

Drawing lessons from what it described as the “painful” 2024 electoral defeat, the caucus warned that unity must become the party’s fundamental strength rather than a mere slogan.

It pointed to the NPP’s electoral victories in 2000, 2004, 2016, and 2020 as evidence that when united, the party becomes formidable, while internal fractures often lead to setbacks that ultimately harm the development trajectory.

Support from Grassroots And Former MPs

The caucus paid tribute to the party’s grassroots machinery—from constituency executives to polling station organisers and volunteers across the country, from Tamale to Takoradi and Aflao to Axim—describing them as the backbone of the party.

It called on them to channel their energies toward supporting Dr. Bawumia while holding the governing National Democratic Congress (NDC) accountable through parliamentary oversight.

The Minority further pledged its full support to Dr. Bawumia, alongside former NPP MPs, citing their collective experience and record in delivering transformative policies such as the Free Senior High School (Free SHS) programme, infrastructure development, and digital economy initiatives.

Minority Outlines Key Areas to Hold Government Accountable

Looking ahead, the Minority Caucus said its immediate task is to intensify scrutiny of the current NDC administration, raising concerns over critical national issues affecting ordinary Ghanaians.

Among the matters highlighted were:

The alleged depletion of Ghana’s gold reserves through questionable transactions

Financial losses linked to bogus gold trading schemes involving state institutions such as the Minerals Commission and the Bank of Ghana

Failures in public transportation systems leaving commuters distressed

Deterioration in the international relations with development partners

Ineffective response to illegal mining (galamsey), which continues to destroy water bodies and farmlands,

The government’s inability to create sustainable employment opportunities for the youth, contributing to growing economic despair

Vision for Post-2028 Ghana Under Bawumia

The Minority Caucus concluded by declaring that the NPP stands “united, renewed, and prepared” to offer accountable governance, economic revival, and inclusive prosperity under Dr. Bawumia’s leadership.

It expressed optimism about a Ghana after 2028 where Free SHS operates efficiently, the economy generates broad-based prosperity, and the nation becomes a beacon of democratic governance and innovation across Africa.
