Ronaldo said, “ I didn’t have respect for him because he doesn’t show respect for me” in an interview after he left Manchester United in January 2023. The 5 time Balon d’Or winner was at loggerheads with the then manager of Manchester United, Erik Ten Hag.

The manager had subtly accused Ronaldo of being a bigger problem for the club because he could not press to his satisfaction. It ultimately led to a huge rift between the two forcing Ronaldo to move to the Middle East to sign for Saudi PRO league side Al-Nassr.

In an Exclusive interview with SEG Stories: The 55-year-old Dutch manager said, “This generation usually finds it difficult to deal with criticism. Criticism really gets to them. The generation I grew up in had much thicker skin. You could be much more direct with that generation. I was approached much more directly. If I would do that with my current group of players, I would demotivate them.”

He added: “With this generation, you choose different words and a different approach. [Sir Alex] Ferguson also belonged to the previous generation. With that generation, you could be much more direct in your communication and approach.

“With this generation, you have to convey your message in a more tactful way to get the same effect. You have to show the player more love. Our generation found that much more difficult to do than this generation.”

Erik Ten Hag won the English League Cup and the FA Cup in his almost 2 and half years stint. He told SEG Stories that he enjoyed his stint with the club. “ I enjoyed my time very much”, I was appreciated by the fans”, he concluded.

“I am not doing anything until July 1”, Ten Hag said when he was quizzed about his return date to the dugout.
