Bruno Labbadia, who was confirmed via the official X account of the Nigeria Football Federation as the new head coach of Super Eagles, Nigeria’s men’s national football team, resigned with just few days into his new job.

It is rumoured that the former Stuttgart and Bayer Leverkusen manager decided to quit the role due to threats to his life and a demand for 10% of his monthly salary.

Austin Owen Eguavon, 59, was given a difficult task to face Benin in Nigeria’s opening game of the 2025 AFCON in Uyo.

The stars were aligned to help Nigeria return back to their 2023 AFCON moment.

Ademola Lookman, 26, stepped up and further showed the reason why he is a genuine contender for the 2024 African Footballer of the Year.

Benin had earlier on battled Nigeria by limiting them to not creating many chances. The best moment in the first half came when Ademola defined the meaning of composure with perfect example by dribbling two Benin defenders in the box and shooting the ball to the left post.

Victor Osimhen came from the bench to double the Super Eagles lead.

Lookman rounded up the night in a grand style for Nigeria by heading the ball into net to make the scoreline 3-0.

It was a beautiful display from Nigeria with Austin Eguavon announcing to the NFF that he can take them back to where they belong.

In other games of the day, Cameeoon won 1-0 over Namibia with star striker Vincent Aboubakar scoring the equaliser.

In Nouakchott, Mauritania beat Botswana 1-0
