The pressure was unbearable for Finidi George after failing to win any of the matchday 3 and 4 of the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers.

Nigeria had drawn the first two games under Jose Peseiro before they embarked on the wonderful run to the AFCON 2023 Finals. It was 1-1 each against Lesotho and Zimbabwe much to the disappointment of Super Eagles fans.

Finidi George replaced Jose Peseiro permanently after the NFF failed to agree on a contract renewal with the astute Portuguese coach after the AFCON 2023.

A lot was expected from George Finidi in the qualifiers but he disappointingly drew 1-1 against Bafana Bafana in Uyo and lost 2-1 against Benin.

The Group C of the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers is topped by Rwanda, South Africa and Benin with each having won 7 points from 4 games. Nigeria sits 5th with just three points. Minnows Lesotho sit in 4th place and are even ahead of Nigeria having won two more than Nigeria.

Super Eagles fans have complained bitterly and bemoaned the appointment of Finidi George calling for his sacking because they feel their American dream is on the verge of dying.

Finidi George has personally resigned from his head coach role after thinking long and hard about it.

Nigeria will competitively return to action in September with the AFCON 2025 qualifiers set to commence in that month. The NFF is expected to appoint a new manager before September.

With the 2026 World Cup qualifiers, Nigeria will return in March 2025.
