Deputy National Sports Authority (NSA) Director General, Bawa Majeed has disclosed that Accra Sports Stadium will only host national teams games instead of club football matches.

Speaking on AKOMA FM in Kumasi, the deputy director said that the clubs have neglected their duty of caring for the pitches thinking it’s the government alone who should care for it.

“In this region of the world, many believe that the facility belongs to the state and that it is the state’s responsibility to maintain it.

“So you have teams that patronize the pitches around, but they are not interested in assisting pitch managers in preserving them.

“Moving forward, we will ensure that the status is maintained; we will not take the pitch maintenance lightly and will not put pressure on it.

“We will designate a facility for the national team, which will remain available to them whenever they are called to service, and we will ensure that the facility is protected”, Bawa added.

“Nothing else than sports will take place at the facility”, said Majeed Bawa.

The biggest issue that the Accra Sports Stadium pitch has encountered is the use for music concerts. Musicians of all genres have been using the pitch for their shows which has become a huge problem in recent years. The NSA deputy director has promised a stop to it.

“As we speak, the Accra Sports Stadium has received Caf and FIFA permission, and it will be operated as a national facility, which means no extracurricular activities will take place there”, Majeed Bawa concluded.

The phrase “no extracurricular activities” is very ambiguous. Is Bawa Majeed saying Hearts of Oak, Accra Lions, Accra Great Olympics and the other clubs that use the Accra Sports Stadium are no longer going to enjoy the venue for their home games or musical shows and crusades are not going to be allowed?
