The campaign team of New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer hopeful, Kwabena Agyei Agyepong (KAA), has downplayed the political significance of the defection of its Campaign Manager, Ofosu Asamoah, describing the development as “unfortunate but not disruptive.”
In a statement issued on December 2, 2025, the KAA Campaign Team acknowledged Ofosu Asamoah’s decision to publicly declare support for former Vice President, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, DMB, but maintained that the campaign’s strength did not depend on “the shifting allegiance of a few individuals.”
As the NPP heads into a decisive presidential primary on January 31, 2026, the party has witnessed intense internal maneuvering, with senior members realigning behind candidates they consider most viable for the 2028 general election.
One such realignment came on December 1, 2025, when Ofosu Asamoah, a former MP for Kade and once the frontline strategist for Ing. Agyepong, mounted a platform with Dr. Bawumia to announce his new allegiance.
According to him, the shift followed a “reassessment” of the internal contest.
He argued that Dr. Bawumia remained the NPP’s best chance of regaining power after its electoral defeat in 2024.
Though he admitted having long-standing ties with the former Vice President, Asamoah indicated that his decision was motivated by the direction of Kwabena Agyepong’s campaign, which he said had not unfolded as expected.
KAA Camp Responds
Reacting to the defection, the KAA Campaign Team expressed no surprise, noting that political crossovers are a common feature in competitive primaries.
Campaign spokesperson Nana Ama Asantewaa Kwarko emphasized that the team remains focused, insisting that Ing. Agyepong’s support base is broad, committed, and built on conviction rather than personality politics.
The statement recalled Agyepong’s decade-long struggle within the party following what it described as “orchestrated political adversity.”
The former NPP General Secretary, suspended in 2015, has since worked to re-establish himself within the party’s hierarchy without turning his back on the NPP, even at moments when he felt ostracized or maligned.
Without the vast financial resources attributed to his competitors, the KAA campaign positions itself as a movement rooted in integrity, sacrifice, and the restoration of the NPP’s founding principles. It argued that its agenda—focused on unity, ethical leadership, and reversing the monetization of internal party elections—continues to resonate strongly with delegates nationwide.
A Call for Calm
The campaign reassured supporters that the journey remains steady and undeterred.
“This campaign is never about a single person; it is about a fundamental cause,” the statement read, urging followers to stay calm and double their commitment as the team intensifies grassroots engagement ahead of the primaries.
The KAA team reiterated that its mission is to return the NPP to its core values of service, sacrifice, and selflessness—values it says were compromised in the period leading to the party’s “most humiliating defeat” in recent political history.
Defection Seen as Boost for Bawumia
Meanwhile, political analysts say Ofosu Asamoah’s endorsement strengthens Dr. Bawumia’s momentum in consolidating support across key constituencies.
As campaign dynamics shift in the final months, the former Vice President continues to attract endorsements from high-ranking party members who view him as the most marketable candidate for the 2028 polls.
