The race to lead the New Patriotic Party (NPP) into the 2028 presidential elections has taken an emotional turn as Christiana Agyapong, wife of outspoken Assin Central former legislator Kennedy Ohene Agyapong, openly campaigned for her husband before party delegates in the Ejisu constituency.
Over the weekend, Ms. Agyapong addressed a packed meeting of mainly female delegates, passionately urging them to rally behind her husband, whom she described as the most “marketable” candidate within the NPP.
Her call underscored the growing momentum of Kennedy Agyapong’s anticipated flagbearer bid, which has long been speculated since his strong showing in the NPP’s 2023 presidential primaries.
According to her, ordinary Ghanaians, regardless of class or background, already see Kennedy Agyapong as the kind of leader who resonates with their struggles and aspirations.
She shared a personal anecdote about a conversation with an Uber driver who, without knowing her identity, declared he would abstain from voting in the 2028 elections unless Kennedy Agyapong was on the ballot.
“That is someone who has never even met my husband, but his conviction shows the genuine love people have for him,” she told the gathering.
“Everywhere I go, people say the same thing: Ken speaks for the voiceless, he says things as they are, and he has always created opportunities for the youth.”
Agyapong highlighted her husband’s track record as a businessman, job creator, and advocate for the welfare of young people, insisting that his blunt, fearless style of politics has made him relatable to the ordinary Ghanaian.
She appealed to delegates not just to consider loyalty or personal ties in the upcoming contest but to vote for “a candidate who can sell the party to the masses.”
“All the aspirants are good people,” she admitted, “but when it comes to winning the trust of the average Ghanaian, Ken is unmatched. He is marketable, relatable, and unstoppable.”
Her comments also carried a subtle message to the NPP hierarchy managing the 2028 flagbearer race.
Kennedy Agyapong, who finished strongly in the party’s 2023 flagbearer elections against then–Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has maintained influence within grassroots structures despite his loss.
His supporters argue that his political honesty and independence from the establishment make him the NPP’s best shot at retaining power beyond 2028.
