The New Patriotic Party (NPP) Constituency Chairman for Yunyoo in the North East Region, Baba Nakoja, has formally withdrawn and disowned an earlier public declaration in which he appeared to endorse former Minister of Food and Agriculture, Dr. Bryan Acheampong, clarifying that the statement was never intended as political support but merely a gesture of courtesy during the former minister’s visit to the area.
Nakoja explained that his remarks, which sparked widespread political discussion and speculation within party circles, were misconstrued as an endorsement in the context of the ongoing internal alignments within the NPP ahead of the party’s next presidential contest.
According to him, the declaration was made solely to accord Dr. Acheampong a warm reception as a senior party member and visiting dignitary, and not as an expression of allegiance to his presidential ambitions.
Providing further background, the Yunyoo Chairman stated that he is, in fact, an active member of the campaign team of former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia in the North East Region.
He stressed that his political commitment has always been firmly rooted in the Bawumia camp and that at no point did he intend to signal a shift in loyalty or create confusion within the party’s grassroots.
Nakoja went on to assert that the NPP in Yunyoo has already taken a firm decision to give Dr. Bawumia overwhelming support, insisting that the Vice President remains the preferred choice of the constituency based on his track record, vision, and long-standing relationship with the region.
He expressed confidence that Dr. Bawumia would secure “100 percent support” in Yunyoo, reflecting what he described as a collective and settled position among party executives and delegates.
In a move aimed at calming tensions and restoring clarity, the constituency chairman officially reversed his earlier statement and offered an unreserved apology to party supporters, executives, and the general public, describing the episode as an “expensive political joke” that had been blown out of proportion.
He admitted that the declaration amounted to a miscommunication and accepted responsibility for the confusion it generated.
Emphasising his loyalty, Nakoja stated unequivocally that he could never betray Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia or the New Patriotic Party, adding that his political history within the party demonstrates consistency and discipline rather than opportunism.
He noted that the reversal should put to rest any lingering doubts about his position.
Political observers in the North East Region had earlier expressed skepticism about the initial endorsement, citing Nakoja’s known association with the Bawumia campaign and the strategic importance of the region to the former Vice President’s political base.
The chairman’s public clarification and apology have now largely confirmed those suspicions and appear to have settled the matter within local party ranks.
