The former president of the Confederation of African Football, Issa Hayatou, has passed away at the age of 77 in Paris.
Born in Douala, Issa Hayatou was the 5th president of CAF having rule from March 1988 to March 2017. After being in office for 29 years, the former Cameroonian athlete, Sports Executive and football administrator played huge role in the development of football across the contininent.
From 1964 – 1971, he was the national Champion in 400m and 800m. Hayatou was a member of the Cameroonian national basketball team and also played football at university level.
It was during his reign that the AFCON was expanded to 16 teams. Also, the CAF Champions league saw a significant changes as the the Money Zone was introduced in 1997.
The Garoua born acted as the President of FIFA between October 2015 and February 2016. He was among the senior vice -president of FIFA from 1992-2017.
