Some Tributes from world leaders to Carter
Outgoing president Joe Biden said in a statement that “America and the world lost an extraordinary leader, statesman and humanitarian” and a man of “great character and courage, hope and optimism.”
“With his compassion and moral clarity, he worked to eradicate disease, forge peace, advance civil rights and human rights, promote free and fair elections, house the homeless, and always advocate for the least among us. He saved, lifted, and changed the lives of people all across the globe,” Biden said and officially ordered a state funeral to be held in Washington, DC.
President-elect Donald Trump urged everyone to keep the Carter family in their prayers. “Those of us who have been fortunate to have served as President understand this is a very exclusive club, and only we can relate to the enormous responsibility of leading the Greatest Nation in History,” Trump wrote on Truth Social. “The challenges Jimmy faced as President came at a pivotal time for our country and he did everything in his power to improve the lives of all Americans. For that, we all owe him a debt of gratitude.”
French President Emmanuel Macron’s reaction:
“Throughout his life, Jimmy Carter has been a steadfast advocate for the rights of the most vulnerable and has tirelessly fought for peace. France sends its heartfelt thoughts to his family and the American people.”
British Prime Minister Keir Starmer reacted:
“I was very sorry to hear of President Carter’s passing and I would like to pay tribute to his decades of selfless public service. His presidency will be remembered for the historic Camp David Accords between Israel and Egypt, and it was that lifelong dedication to peace that saw him receive the Nobel Peace Prize. Motivated by his strong faith and values, President Carter redefined the post-presidency with a remarkable commitment to social justice and human rights at home and abroad. Whether supporting elections around the world and spreading healthcare solutions through the Carter Center or still building homes with Habitat for Humanity into his nineties, Jimmy Carter lived his values in the service of others to the very end. My thoughts are with his family and friends at this time.”
Among his achievements that won him the Noble Peace Prize in 2002 are; putting human rights firmly on the international agenda, persuading Congress to cede US control of the Panama Canal, demonstrating that peace settlements could be achieved in the Middle East, and completing the second strategic arms limitation treaty with the Soviet Union.
He is known as the last presidential candidate for a Democrat to win in Texas. Mr Carter died on Sunday at home surrounded by his family members.
