Former Black Stars forward Mfum has passed away at the age of 88 after battling a short illness. The ex-Asante Kotoko hit man has been one of the biggest names to have ever played football in Ghana after playing an incredible role in Ghana’s triumph in the 1963 AFCON.

In an illustrious career spanning nearly two decades, Wilberforce Mfum played for Ghana in the 1964 Olympics games hosted by Tokyo in Japan. In 1963, Mfum scored a brace in the finals of the AFCON when Ghana beat Sudan 3-0 in the finals to lift their maiden AFCON title. Mfum also helped Ghana finish as the runner-up in the 1968 AFCON, where Congo-Kinshasa won 1-0.

In 26 appearances for the Black Stars, the legendary striker scored 20 goals for Ghana. Mfum is one of the few players who played in Europe and America in the olden days.

After a successful stint with Asante Kotoko, he moved to the USA and played for sides like Baltimore Bays in 1968, Ukrainian SC in the 1969-70 season. In 1970, he signed for the Philadelphia side Ukrainian Nationals and later joined the New York Cosmos in the 1971-72 season.

Mfum will go down in history as one of the few people who made football an attractive sport in Ghana.
