Ghanaian rapper Okyeame Kwame has thrown his support behind the Ghana Education Service regarding the decision to use the mother tongue as a medium of instruction in classrooms.
Ghanaians have been divided by the use of the English Language to teach even Class one students, with many stating clearly that the pupils struggle to understand whatever is being said in the classroom.
Education Minister Haruna Iddrisu confirmed that the Education Minister and the government have reached an agreement to use
“I’m directing all the Director Generals of the Ghana Education Service and the Ghana Education that from today, teacher use of mother tongue instruction is now compulsory in all Ghanaian schools. The GES is to ensure strict enforcement of this….This is part of President Mahama’s reset agenda,” the minister said during the launch of the free tertiary education for people living with disabilities.
Musician Okyeame Kwame on his Facebook wall expressed his delight in hearing that local languages must be used compulsorily by teachers.
“The most sensible thing I have seen today. Thank you for your great leadership. Now let’s translate all the science books into all the lettered local languages and teach them in the mother tongue,” Kwame wrote on Facebook.
The legendary rapper is well known for his love for the use of local languages, as he has demonstrated in his songs.
The use of local languages in the basic schools is expected to help the teachers link successfully with the pupils, as they will need no extra explanations to understand the content.
