Day 2 of Women’s football in the Paris 2024 produced real excitement with Africa’s two representatives losing again.

Zambia lost 6-5 against Australia in an unbelievable manner. Barbara Banda scored an impressive hattrick while a brace from Rachael Kundananji were not enough to save the Copper Queens from losing.

Zambia’s defeat is difficult to explain because they were ahead by 5-2 in the 56th minute but the Australians scored 4 goals in the last 32 minutes to stage one of the all time come backs in the history of world football.

USA thrashed Germany 4-1 with the former Chelsea coach Emma Hayes recording her second win in the Olympics Games. Group B is wide open with Australia, Germany and Zambia all having a chance to join USA in the knockout phase.

Group A saw Colombia beat New Zealand 2-0 with Restrepo and Santos scoring in each half. Defending champions, Canada, via Vanessa Gilles scored very late in the game to beat host France 2-1.

Japan scored twice to win 2-1 in the 92nd and 96th minute against Brazil who took the lead in the 56th minute through Jhennifer.

Alexia Putellas scored in 85th minute for Spain to condemn the Super Falcons of Nigeria to a 1-0 defeat. Nigeria are on the brink of exit as they have zero points from two games. Nigeria must win heavily to stand any chance of qualifying in their final game against Japan.
