Rhulani Mlungisi Mokwena is only 38 years old, but his resume could be one of the best on the continent. The African Pep, as I call him, has learned his trade so well that when you watch his team play, you will only get excited and praise him.
Orlando Pirates will soon confirm the appointment of the former Sundowns and Wydad Athletic head coach, Rulani Mokwena, as the replacement for Jose Riveiro, who is now the head coach of Egyptian side Al Ahly. The Spanish coach took the Bucs to the semi-finals of the CAF Champions League, where they played some of the most attractive football in the just-ended season.
Rulani Mokwena’s job is so simple, he will continue from where Jose Riveiro ended. To end Mamelodi Sundowns’ complete dominance in the Betway Premiership, it will take serious investment and performances from his side.
Mokwena last season finished third with Moroccan side Wydad Casablanca in the Moroccan Botola and will be eager to improve on his third-place finish next season with Orlando Pirates.
The son of former Orlando Pirates player, Sono Hloae Julius and the nephew of Jomo Sono, who twice had stints with the Bucs, Mokwena is an Orlando Pirates fan as some of his family members have supported the club all their lives. The young manager was the assistant coach for the club between 2017-2020 before being confirmed as the interim boss in 2019. He is now set to be in full charge of the Bucs.
Per multiple sources from the South African media, talks are advanced, but final details about his technical team are what is left now. Mokwena wants Michael Loftman to assist him alongside Mandla Ncikazi, who will likely stay.
The deal is expected to be confirmed before the pre-season starts for the Bucs. The club will compete in the 2025-26 CAF Champions League.
