More than 63,000 people have died in road traffic accidents across Ghana over the past three decades, the National Road Safety Authority (NRSA) has disclosed, describing the situation as a growing national crisis.

According to the Authority, a total of 63,599 fatalities have been recorded since 1991, reflecting the devastating and persistent toll of road crashes on families and communities nationwide.

The figures show that 2025 was one of the deadliest years in recent history, with 2,949 people losing their lives in traffic accidents alone.

The NRSA said the trend remains deeply worrying and called for urgent, coordinated action to reverse the rising death toll.

It urged stronger enforcement of traffic regulations, improved road infrastructure, increased investment in safety interventions, and sustained public education to promote responsible road use.

“The cumulative loss of over 63,000 lives is a national tragedy that demands renewed commitment from all stakeholders,” the Authority noted.

The NRSA stressed that without decisive measures from government agencies, transport unions, and road users themselves, the country risks seeing even higher fatalities in the coming years.
