The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has officially referred multiple petitions filed against its Deputy Director of Communications, Ernest Kofi Owusu Bempah
The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has officially referred multiple petitions filed against its Deputy Director of Communications, Ernest Kofi Owusu Bempah, to the party’s National Council for consideration, signaling that the controversy surrounding his conduct is being treated as a matter of high-level concern.
In a statement released on Tuesday, September 24, 2025, and signed by General Secretary Justin Kodua Frimpong, the party confirmed it had received petitions from some members who are demanding Owusu Bempah’s removal from his position and if possible expel from the party for anti-party activities.
The complaints reportedly center on his public utterances and actions, which petitioners argue are inconsistent with the values and standards of the party.
Appointment and Process
Owusu Bempah, a political communicator and outspoken figure, was appointed as Deputy Director of Communications on the recommendation of the NPP’s National Executive Committee (NEC). He was also Communications Manager at the Ghana Gas before he quit after the party lost the 2024n elections. Some critics are accusing him of contributing to the NPP’s defeat in the Asante Akyem North constituency, where an Independent parliamentary candidate won the seat for the first time with over 70% of the votes.
His appointment was subsequently ratified by the National Council, the party’s highest decision-making body outside of its annual delegates conference.
According to the NPP, because the appointment was approved by the Council, it is only proper that the same body decides the outcome of the petitions now before the party.
This approach, officials argue, ensures transparency and due process.
“The Party reaffirms its unwavering commitment to upholding discipline, safeguarding its values, and ensuring that all matters are handled with fairness and transparency,” the statement stressed.
Rising Internal Tensions
The petitions against Owusu Bempah come at a sensitive moment for the NPP as it navigates internal divisions ahead of the 2028 general elections. Questions of discipline and accountability within the party’s rank-and-file have intensified, with several senior members cautioning against the tolerance of conduct that could damage the NPP’s public image.
The referral of the case to the National Council underscores the importance party leadership is placing on the issue, particularly as the NPP faces scrutiny from both its grassroots members and political opponents.
A Familiar Figure In Controversy
Owusu Bempah, who has served in various political communication roles over the years, is no stranger to controversy.
This is not the first time petitions or calls for disciplinary action have been raised against him.
Party insiders note that while his combative style has sometimes rallied the NPP’s base, it has also drawn unwanted criticism and needless attacks.
What Next?
The National Council is expected to deliberate on the petitions in the coming weeks.
Depending on the outcome, Owusu Bempah could either be cleared of wrongdoing, cautioned, or removed from his role as Deputy Communications Director or expel if he doesn’t conform to rules.
For now, the NPP leadership has urged members to remain calm while the Council undertakes its review.
