The Ghana Police Service has launched a full investigation into a violent disturbance that disrupted the District Schools Athletics Games held in Agona Swedru in the Central Region on February 19.

The sporting event, which was meant to celebrate youth talent, teamwork and healthy competition, reportedly descended into chaos after tensions flared between students from Obrachire Senior High Technical School and Swedru School of Business, popularly known as SWESBUS.

Eyewitness accounts indicate that an exchange between students from the two schools escalated rapidly, culminating in a physical confrontation.

Amid the unrest, a student from Obrachire was allegedly set upon by a group of colleagues, beaten with sticks and pelted with stones.

The attack only came to an end after teachers, officials and bystanders intervened to break up the fight. The injured student was later rushed to a nearby health facility for medical treatment.

Footage of the incident, which has since gone viral on social media, shows scenes of panic and confusion, with a crowd surrounding the injured student as tempers flared at the sporting grounds.

In a statement shared on its official Facebook page, the Ghana Police Service confirmed it had taken note of the widely circulated video and was actively investigating the matter.

“The Ghana Police Service has sighted a viral video in which a group of people are seen pelting stones at a student. Investigations into the incident are ongoing, and further developments will be communicated in due course. The Service strongly condemns the violence and assures the public that all perpetrators will be identified and brought to justice,” the statement said.

Police have assured the public that anyone found responsible for the violence will face the full rigours of the law, as investigators work to establish the exact sequence of events that led to the clash.

The incident has triggered widespread concern among parents, residents and education stakeholders, with renewed calls for tighter security, improved supervision and stricter discipline at inter-school sporting events to prevent similar occurrences in the future.

Authorities say updates will be provided as investigations continue.
