Reggae legend Jimmy Cliff has died at the age of 81, leaving behind a towering legacy as one of Jamaica’s most influential musicians and cultural ambassadors.

His wife, Latifa Chambers, confirmed that Cliff passed away following a seizure and pneumonia, marking the end of a career that spanned more than six decades.

Born James Chambers in 1944, Jimmy Cliff rose to prominence in the 1960s, becoming one of the first reggae artists to achieve international recognition.

His uplifting anthems, such as Wonderful World’, ‘Beautiful People’, ‘You Can Get It If You Really Want’, and ‘Many Rivers to Cross’, carried the sound of Jamaica far beyond the Caribbean.

Cliff’s artistry was not confined to music alone; his starring role in the 1972 film The Harder They Come is widely credited with introducing reggae to American audiences and cementing his place as a cultural icon.

Throughout his career, Cliff remained a bridge between reggae’s grassroots origins and its global reach.

His cover of I Can See Clearly Now for the 1993 film Cool Runnings brought his voice to a new generation, while his collaborations with artists across genres showcased his versatility.

He was celebrated not only for his music but also for his ability to embody the resilience and hope of Jamaica’s people, making him a symbol of unity and perseverance.

Tributes have poured in from across the world, with fans and fellow musicians remembering Cliff as a pioneer who gave reggae its international heartbeat.

His wife’s statement emphasised the strength he drew from his supporters, noting that “your support was his strength throughout his whole career.”

As the world mourns his passing, Jimmy Cliff’s songs and spirit will continue to inspire, reminding listeners that even in the face of struggle, one can always “get it if you really want.”
