On Wednesday, 6th August, the entire Ghana was thrown into a sombre mood after a helicopter carrying eight passengers, including ministers of state, former ministers and other important dignitaries, crashed in the Ashanti Region, killing everyone on board.
Footage from the forest near Obuasi was disturbing as it showed smouldering wreckage from the crash.
Videos are still circulating on social media showing how the members on board were burnt to ashes.
The various telecommunication networks were sending SMS to all mobile phones to order Ghanaians to stop distributing them.
Sam Nartey George, the Minister for Communications, Digital Technology and Innovation, in an interview on Joy News, described the situation as a “mixed experience” and revealed that he nearly ordered the telecommunication networks to shut down completely to prevent people from accessing the internet.
Sam George also praised telecom companies for their quick reactions during the crisis, as they made the public aware of the dangers of sharing the disturbing videos and pictures.
His worries come from the fast spread of graphic and upsetting videos on social media platforms like WhatsApp, which he believes would traumatise the families of the victims before any official news was released.
