The CAF Champions League and the Confederation Cup has enjoyed the current formats since 1997 and 2004. 16 teams now compete in each of the two tiers of African club football compared to Europe, Asia and South America that have at least 32 teams that compete in the group stage.

President of Cameroonian Football federation, Samuel Eto’o has called for changes in the two Premier club competitions as he thinks more teams from the dominant countries should be added to catch the attention and interest of the football fans on the continent.

“I think that it is time to change the system of the CAF Champions League & the Confederation Cup.

“Look at the system of Europe, Asia and others, they have more clubs than those weaker ones.

“Strong countries in Africa such as Morocco, Egypt, Algeria, Libya, Tunisia, Senegal, Tanzania, DR Congo and South Africa must at least have four teams in the Champions League + Confederation Cup always.

“This system will strengthen the competition, bring some competitiveness and will attract many fans and followers to watch it.

“Almost every continent is developing their competition and Africa must do the same too.

“We must stand up for this and make sure we bring changes to our competitions too because for me, African football is the best”, conclided Eto’o.

Club football on the continent has been enjoying success lately since the appointment of Patrice Motsepe as the CAF president. The South African business mogul has been so sensational so far in his administration showing that he has huge plans for the continent.
