It is 24 years since English Centre back Solomon Campbell shocked the Tottenham Hotspur fraternity by signing for Arsenal as a free agent. The former Spurs skipper never hinted at quitting Tottenham as a free agent but left without saying goodbye.

When Campbell’s contract was about to expire, he had the opportunity to sign for all the other big clubs across Europe but decided to join Tottenham Hotspurs’ eternal rivals, Arsenal. Spurs fans have since then abused him anytime they come across him dubbing him JUDAS.

Sol Campbell joined Tottenham Academy in 189 and spent three seasons before being promoted after a year stay at the West Ham Unite Academy. After 11 years of stay at the red side of North London, the 6ft 2in defender decided to do the unthinkable.

Solomon Campbell, 50, winded up Spurs fans and reopened old wounds in a phone advert.

The former England defender in an advert for Google Pixel Phones changed from a white sweater to red and said, ‘”Big moves pay off”. The North London Derby is on Wednesday night at the Emirates with many praising the advert for adding a huge dimension to the must-win fixture for title chasers Arsenal and strugglers Tottenham Hotspurs.

“It’s that time of year again, the time when people start to wonder if the grass might be greener. Whether they should switch sides and change allegiances. Take it from me, big moves pay off. Sure people will have opinions, but who cares what people think?

“Of course, you could stay with them for another year, but is anything going to change? It certainly doesn’t look like it to me. If you’re thinking about a transfer this January, I say go for it.

“It’s not like you’re doing anything outrageous, you’re just switching to something much, much better.”

Campbell then flops onto his sofa and fires up his Google Pixel phone, casually asking: “What were we just talking about?”

Then the phone retorts: “We were talking about separating delicate whites from strong colours like red in your laundry,” prompting Campbell to smirk and respond “Yeah that was it.”

Sol Campbell’s move from Tottenham Hotspurs to Arsenal is probably the biggest free transfer ever happened between two bitterest rivals.

He won the Football League Cup for Tottenham in the 1998-99 season.

At Arsenal, his move paid off because he twice won the EPL (2001-02, 2003-04), twice won the FA Cup (2001-02, 2004-05) a Community Shield in 2002 and a runner-up medal in 2005-06 UCL when Arsenal lost 2-1 to Barcelona in Paris.
