South Africa has been thrown into a mourning mood after French media reported that the ambassador of South Africa to France was discovered dead outside a hotel in Paris.
According to Le Parisien, his wife contacted the police after getting a concerning message earlier that evening.
Authorities found the body outside the Hyatt Hotel following a thorough search.
The International Relations Ministry of South Africa stated that it is aware of the reports and will provide a statement when more information becomes available.
Nathi Mthethwa, aged 58, was designated as the ambassador to France in February 2024.
Mthethwa served as South Africa’s minister of police under President Jacob Zuma.
He held the position of minister of arts and culture from 2014 to 2019 and took on the additional responsibility for sports from 2019 to 2023.
He was a member of the board of directors for the local organising committee of the 2010 football World Cup and was involved in the senior leadership of the African National Congress (ANC) from 2007 to 2022.
He was part of the military wing of the ANC and was detained by the apartheid government in 1989.
South Africa’s president Ramaphosa paid tribute to Mthwethwa
‘A moment of deep grief’ — ” The untimely passing” was “a moment of deep grief in which government and citizens stand beside the Mthethwa family.”
Ramaphosa added, “Mthwethwa had served South Africa in a number of capacities “during a lifetime that has ended prematurely and traumatically.”
