Kofi Adams, the Minister of Sports and Recreation, has confirmed that current sports facilities will be significantly upgraded, while President John Dramani Mahama plans to fulfil his commitment to construct seven new stadiums next year.

The Baba Yara Stadium in Kumasi and the Essipong Stadium in Sekondi are currently closed for renovations, and many other facilities have become dilapidated due to years of inadequate maintenance.

The Accra Sports Stadium is the only location approved to host matches sanctioned by CAF and FIFA.

However, some areas of the stadium have been closed off for safety reasons.

In an interview with Channel One, Adams, the Member of Parliament for Buem Constituency, highlighted the importance of making substantial improvements instead of just minor repairs.

“We are not just going to renovate, we are going to refurbish [existing stadiums].

“When I took over [as Minister] and looked through the documents, huge sums of money, millions of cedis, have been spent in the name of renovation, but we don’t see anything.

“We think that we must properly refurbish the stadia that we have to a very acceptable standard, which will be worked on.

President Mahama has disclosed to Ghanaians that seven new venues will be built in regions where there are no standard stadia.
