A 25-year-old driver named Stephen Ampofo, also referred to as Kwabena Atta, has received a 15-year prison sentence with hard labour from the Tarkwa Circuit Court for theft and assaulting his neighbour.
The court, led by Mrs. Hathia Ama Manu, instructed Ampofo to pay GHS5,000 in compensation to the victim, Elisha Makom. Police prosecutor ASP Joseph Lartey stated that both individuals lived in Wassa Dawurampong, located in Ghana’s Western Region. On February 28, 2025, Makom, who was healing from an injury, prepared hot water for a massage.
Ampofo came to visit and offered assistance, which Makom agreed to accept. Eventually, Makom went to sleep with his Itel keypad phone next to him.
Ampofo left at first but came back while Makom was still asleep and took the phone. When Makom noticed that it was missing, he went to Ampofo’s house and found the phone there, but it did not have its battery.
Ampofo first denied the theft, but later he issued an apology. Later that day, at approximately 5:30 p.m., Ampofo went back to Makom’s house.
Upon discovering him at rest, he used a cutlass to cut Makom’s throat before escaping.
Makom’s cries drew the attention of neighbours, who quickly took him to a nearby health centre.
Stephen was handed over to the Police in Bawdie after being arrested. After thorough interrogations, Stephen confirmed that he committed the murder and was under the influence of Akpeteshie.
