Former Accra Great Olympics, Accra Hearts of Oak and Ghana international Gladson Awako has expressed their delight in the quality of players playing in the Ghana Premier League.
Ghana’s top division has seen a massive improvement in terms of player selection into the Black Stars since the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar.
The Ghana national team was all about local players from independence until the beginning of the new millennium when players plying their trade abroad, especially in Europe, were only given the chance to represent the Black Stars.
Gladys Awako told Radio Gold: “We have good quality players in the league [GPL]. We have a couple of players in the national team and when you check their statistics in the league, they are not doing badly at all”.
Players like Nations FC’s Razak Simpson and Kamaradini Mamudu of Medeama SC are now part of the team, as Otto Addo has been including them in his call-ups since last year. Kotoko’s Albert Amoah, Frederick Asare and Kwame Poku afabe all been selected to the Black Stars recently.
Hearts of Oak’s Benjamin Asare is now the number-one goalkeeper, while Samartex left-back Isaac Afful has all been allowed to be part of the team since 2024.
“I don’t think these are the only players doing well, we have other players as well. If given the opportunity, they will also bring out something for the world to see that the league is not doing badly.
“We all appreciate the chance that they have given to those there now, and what I have seen now is they are doing well, and they want to maintain their spot in the team, and it shouldn’t be like they went there to add up to the numbers,” Awako said.
The Ghana Premier League is in a mess but there are so many quality players around, and with proper scouting, the national teams will benefit.
