US President Donald Trump has threatened to relocate matches from cities he deems unsafe during the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Speaking from the Oval Office, Trump emphasized that safety would be paramount, stating, “If I think it isn’t safe, we’ll move it into a different city.”

Cities Under Scrutiny

Trump specifically mentioned Democratic-run cities like Seattle and San Francisco, both hosting six matches, and Los Angeles, scheduled for eight fixtures and the 2028 Olympic Games, as potential concerns.

“If any city we think is going to be even a little bit dangerous… we won’t allow it to go,” Trump added.

Logistical Challenges

However, altering venues at this stage would pose significant logistical challenges, including stadium readiness, ticketing, accommodation, and broadcasting arrangements.

FIFA, the governing body responsible for the tournament, would need to be involved in any decisions.

Trump’s Influence

Despite potential authority issues, Trump’s close relationship with FIFA president Gianni Infantino and his role as chair of the World Cup taskforce could give him some influence over tournament planning.

Impact on Tournament Schedule

With less than a year to go before the opening match, questions remain about whether Trump’s threat could reshape the tournament’s schedule. The 2026 World Cup is expected to be the biggest sporting event ever staged in North America, with 78 matches set to be hosted in the US.
