The Ghana Education Service (GES) has confirmed the arrest of two students in the Eastern Region over their alleged involvement in a sexual assault incident linked to the recently held Super Zonal Sports Competition, describing the development as deeply disturbing and unacceptable.

In an official statement released on Tuesday, February 11, and signed by the Head of Public Relations, Daniel Fenyi, GES disclosed that police are still pursuing a third suspect, identified as the alleged mastermind of the attack and a former student of Koforidua Senior High Technical School.

GES expressed strong condemnation of the alleged assault, stressing that acts of sexual violence and lawlessness have no place in Ghana’s educational environment.

“The Ghana Education Service denounces these acts in the strongest possible terms and reiterates that such conduct is completely incompatible with the values and standards of our education system,” the statement noted.

Preliminary information indicates that the victim, a female student from Osino Senior High School, was allegedly assaulted in a nearby bush away from the main sports grounds. She was treated at a medical facility, discharged, and is currently receiving counselling and psychosocial support from GES officials in collaboration with the Domestic Violence and Victim Support Unit (DOVVSU).

Beyond the alleged rape, GES also raised concerns about additional violent incidents recorded during the event. One such case involved a student of Koforidua Senior High Technical School who was reportedly stabbed about 200 metres from the competition venue while on a lunch break.

The student has since been treated and discharged, while a suspect connected to the attack is in police custody assisting with investigations.

The Service reaffirmed that inter-school sports competitions are intended to foster discipline, teamwork, and talent development, not violence or criminal behaviour.

“It is unacceptable for school sporting activities, or events associated with them, to be marred by acts of brutality, sexual abuse, or any form of criminal misconduct,” the statement emphasised.

As part of corrective measures, GES has instructed the Eastern Regional Director of Education to enforce appropriate disciplinary actions against the schools involved, in line with established codes of conduct, to deter future occurrences.

GES has also appealed to parents, students, and the general public to remain calm and to support ongoing police investigations as authorities work to ensure justice is served.
