The quarter-finals of the UCL commenced on Tuesday night with Aston Villa winning 3-1 in Belgium against Club Brugge.
Leon Bailey’s sumptuous 3rd-minute strike was cancelled by De Cuyper’s goal in the 12th minute. An unfortunate own goal from Mechele put Aston Villa in the lead in the 82nd minute. 88th-minute penalty from the red-hot Marco Asensio helped Aston Villa secure an impressive 3-1 win in Belgium.
Icelander international Hakon Arnar Haraldssons’ second-half goal for French side LOSC Lille cancelled Karim Adeyemi’s first-half strike for Dortmund. The game ended 1-1 with Lille the happiest of the two teams.
Arsenal broke PSV Eindhoven into pieces at the Phillips Stadion in Eindhoven. The Gunners won 7-1 away from home to end the contest with the second leg set to be a dead rubber. The attention was on Madrid, the capital of Spain. Cross-town rivals Real Madrid and Atletico Madrid squared off at the Santiago Bernabeu, with Real Madrid winning 2-1 in the first leg.
Rodrygo’s delightful strike put Real Madri in front earlier in the game. Julian Alvarez’s unbelievable curler from the edge of the box restored parity before halftime. Moroccan forward Brahim Diaz, with 10 minutes into the second half, made it 2-1 in favour of Real Madrid.
Los Blancos defended well and protected their lead. The return leg next Wednesday will be a cagey affair as both sides will look forward to progressing to the quarter-finals.
