The University of Ghana has taken decisive action against one of its senior lecturers, Dr. Sampson Obed Appiah, suspending him for two semesters over allegations of sexual harassment.
The suspension, which was confirmed in a notice signed by the Registrar of the University, Emelia Agyei-Mensah, is a significant development in the university’s efforts to address the issue of sexual misconduct.
According to the notice, Dr. Appiah was found guilty of violating Section 1.1 (A) of the Sexual Harassment and Misconduct Policy and Section 10.0 of the Code of Conduct for Academic Staff.
The suspension is effective from the second semester of the 2024/2025 academic year and will last until the first semester of the 2025/2026 academic year.
In addition to the suspension, Dr. Appiah has also been barred from applying for promotion to the next highest grade for one year after the suspension period ends.
He has also been required to undergo training on sexual harassment and misconduct, which will be conducted by the Anti-Sexual Harassment Committee.
Furthermore, he has been ordered to issue a written apology to the complainant.
Dr. Appiah’s suspension is not the first instance of sexual misconduct at the University of Ghana.
In recent years, there have been several reports of sexual harassment and misconduct involving lecturers and students.
The university has taken steps to address the issue, including the establishment of the Anti-Sexual Harassment Committee.
Dr. Appiah is a senior lecturer in the Sociology Department at the University of Ghana.
He holds a PhD in Sociology from the University of Ghana and has published several books and articles on topics related to sociology and industrial safety.
