Severe tensions have erupted in South Africa, specifically in the Eastern Cape city of KuGompo (formerly East London), following the controversial installation of a Nigerian traditional leader.
Demonstrators and local traditional leaders expressed intense outrage over a video circulating on social media that appeared to show the coronation of an “Igwe Ndigbo” (King of the Igbo people).
South African critics and political groups, including ActionSA, argued that crowning a foreign king on South African soil is an unacceptable violation of the nation’s sovereignty and an affront to its established local traditional authorities.
The situation rapidly escalated into violence when thousands of people took to the streets to protest the alleged coronation.
Chaos broke out in the city, resulting in at least 12 vehicles being torched, several buildings set ablaze, and shops allegedly belonging to foreign nationals being looted.
Clashes between demonstrators and law enforcement required the Public Order Policing Unit to deploy crowd-control measures, including stun grenades and rubber bullets, to regain control of the volatile scene.
In response to the exploding unrest, the Nigerian High Commission in South Africa issued a statement attempting to de-escalate the situation.
They denied that a formal coronation had taken place, clarifying that the gathering was strictly a cultural celebration meant to organise and support the local Igbo diaspora, with no intention of asserting political authority or creating a parallel government.
Despite these reassurances and apologies to the South African government, the incident has reignited deep-seated fears regarding xenophobic attacks and highlighted ongoing social friction over immigration and economic hardship in the region.
