Imagine a local goalkeeper benching keepers who play in England and Switzerland. You need to be beyond brilliant before you can bench a goalkeeper who has been the number one goalkeeper for the Black Stars for more than three years.

Hearts of Oak’s Benjamin Asare has shocked many Ghanaian football fans after keeping two clean sheets in two games in March’s international break. The goalkeeper has been Hearst of Oka’s best player in the GPL and probably the best among all the goalkeepers.

When Otto Addo announced his squad for the Chad and Madagascar games, Benjamin Asare’s name appeared. As the games approached, it was rumored he would start, and surprisingly, Otto Addo chose him.

Asare’s performance was super, and many think he should be the number one goalkeeper for the Black Stars going forward.

After Ghana’s 3-0 win over Madagascar at the Grande Stade Al-Hociema in Morocco, Ghana’s goalkeeper Asare expressed his delight at the support he got from Ghanaians.

”I am happy with the confidence they have in me and the support. I am happy that I lived up to their expectation,” Benjamin said.

“If a local player is good, he deserves a platform. Sometimes people think that once you are a local player, the national team will be difficult, but we are very determined,” Asare concluded. Ghana Premier League players have been neglected over the years for foreign-based ones. There is no trust in them, but Benjamin Asare thinks that they have what it takes to represent Ghana because they are very determined.

Ghana now has a 90% chance to qualify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup to be played in the USA-Canada-Mexico. Ghana has won 15 points and sits on top of Group I and is 5 points ahead of the second placed Madagascar.
