Otumfuo Gyaasehene Katakyie Adubofour Kwaw has strongly condemned Asante queen mothers wearing artificial nails, eyelashes, and heavy makeup, describing it as a violation of Asante cultural norms and values.
In an interview on Opemsuo Radio, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II’s Gyaasehene expressed concern over the growing practice among some queen mothers to adopt modern beauty enhancements that, in his view, contradict the dignity and cultural expectations of their roles.
He emphasised that queen mothers are custodians of tradition and play a vital role in guiding young girls through puberty rites and other cultural transitions.
As such, their appearance should reflect modesty, cultural pride, and ancestral values.
He argued that the use of long artificial nails, false eyelashes, and excessive makeup undermines the solemnity and spiritual authority of queen mothers.
According to Asante customs, these leaders are expected to embody the virtues of discipline, humility, and cultural integrity.
Katakyie Adubofour Kwaw noted that while some may adopt these styles for personal or lifestyle reasons, it is inappropriate for those who hold such revered positions within the traditional hierarchy.
He cautioned that such practices could erode the respect and seriousness associated with their roles.
