Thieves have raided the defunct Asubingya Irrigation Facility in Wenchi, located in Ghana’s Bono Region, making away with three critical water pumps.
The theft was discovered during a recent inspection by an assessment team from Accra, accompanied by technical personnel from the Wenchi Municipal Assembly.
The team found the facility’s powerhouse in ruins, although the electricity cables remained untouched. Other equipment at the site was also found to be obsolete, raising concerns about the vulnerability of the infrastructure.
Mr Emmanuel Afful, the Wenchi Municipal Director of Agriculture, confirmed the incident and stated that the matter has been reported to the Wenchi police for investigation.
He expressed disappointment over the theft, especially since the government had plans to revamp the facility and restore its operations.
The stolen pumps were essential to the irrigation system, and their loss could further delay the rehabilitation process, which is aimed at boosting agricultural productivity in the region.
The Asubingya Irrigation Facility, once a vital resource for local farmers, has been inactive for years due to technical and financial challenges.
The recent theft underscores the need for improved security measures at dormant public infrastructure sites.
As authorities work to recover the stolen equipment and bring the perpetrators to justice, stakeholders are urging swift action to protect remaining assets and accelerate the facility’s restoration to support food security and rural development.
