Real Madrid have confirmed the departure of head coach Xabi Alonso after seven months in charge. The young manager who convinced everyone that he was the next big thing after winning the German Bundesliga title for Bayer Leverkusen and reaching the finals of the Europa League in the 2024-25 season was sacked after the 3-2 defeat to Barcelona in the finals of the Spanish Super Cup on Sunday night in Saudi Arabia.
The signs were clear that Alonso was on the brink of disaster if he failed to win the Spanish Super Cup.
Real Madrid revealed that it was a mutual agreement between the two parties.
A club statement read: “Real Madrid C.F. announces that, by mutual agreement between the club and Xabi Alonso, it has been decided to end his tenure as first-team coach. Xabi Alonso will always have the affection and admiration of all Madrid fans because he is a Real Madrid legend and has always embodied the values of our club. Real Madrid will always be his home.
“Our club thanks Xabi Alonso and his entire coaching staff for their work and dedication during this time, and wishes them the best of luck in this new chapter of their lives.”
Alonso will be replaced by Alvaro Arbeloa on an interim basis, with the club looking for a replacement for Alonso.
