A tragic accident claimed the lives of 13 passengers in the early hours of today, Monday, October 14, 2024. This came after a VIP bus travelling from Kumasi to Enchi veered off the road and plunged into a ditch near Kwapia, close to Obuasi in the Ashanti Region.
According to a report on myjoyonline, among the deceased were seven males, five females, and a child. All but one of the victims died instantly at the scene. The sole survivor, the bus driver identified as Osei Adu, was rushed to the hospital but sadly succumbed to his injuries shortly after arrival.
The accident has sent shockwaves through the local community as families mourn the loss of their loved ones.
Reports suggest that the bus, with registration number ER 2445-11, was overloaded after it picked up several stranded passengers from another bus that had broken down along the route. Eyewitnesses claim that tensions flared among the passengers over the overcrowded conditions, which may have distracted the driver, leading to the crash.
Just days earlier, on October 11, 2024, another VIP bus was involved in a fatal collision with a Sprinter bus on the Accra-Kumasi highway near Atwedie. Six people died on the spot, with speed and reckless driving cited as possible causes.
These incidents follow a deadly crash in September 2024 on the Accra-Kumasi highway near Suhum, where a VIP bus collided with a fuel tanker, leading to multiple deaths.
