South Africa has been deducted three points by FIFA after fielding an unqualified player in the 2-0 victory over Lesotho.

FIFA Disciplinary Committee ruled on Monday that midfielder Tebogo Mokoena should not have played against Lesotho on 21 March 2025.

According to the FIFA constitution, South Africa has breached Article 19 of the FIFA Disciplinary Code (FDC) and Article 14 of the FIFA World Cup 2026 Preliminary Competition Regulations.

Hence, the disciplinary committee has declared that the match has been forfeited by South Africa by a 3-0 score line.

Benin has moved to the summit of the table, levelled with Bafana Bafana on 14 points.

The decision has opened Group C wide, with South Africa having 10 days to appeal.

Nigeria and Rwanda now have a huge opportunity to win the group as both teams trail Benin by just three points.

Hugo Broos’ side must beat Zimbabwe and Rwanda to stand any chance of winning the group.
