A predawn road crash involving three heavy-duty trucks has claimed three lives and left two others injured on the Kumasi-Accra Highway, near Akyem Asafo, plunging the area into mourning and prompting a police investigation into the cause of the incident.

The tragic accident occurred in the early hours of Monday, May 12, 2025.

Eyewitness accounts and preliminary police reports indicate that a DAF trailer, registered 6294-11 and loaded with bags of cocoa, had broken down in the middle of the highway.

The truck had reportedly been stationary for some time without adequate warning signals to alert approaching vehicles.

As darkness still cloaked the stretch, a Scania truck with registration number GS 6429-11, heading towards Accra, plowed into the immobilized cocoa truck.

Trailing closely behind was a Howo tipper truck—registration number yet to be confirmed—which also crashed into the wreckage.

The resulting collision was devastating that the driver of the Scania truck died instantly, along with two female passengers believed to be traders.

Their bodies were mangled in the twisted metal of the wrecked vehicle, which drew the attention and horror of nearby residents and passersby.

Emergency services, including officers from the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) stationed at Bunso, personnel from the Suhum Police Motor Traffic and Transport Department (MTTD), and paramedics from the National Ambulance Service, swiftly responded to the scene.

It took hours to extricate the victims and clear the highway for traffic to resume.

The bodies of the deceased have since been deposited at the Suhum Government Hospital morgue, where autopsies are expected to be conducted.

Two other individuals who sustained varying degrees of injuries are receiving treatment at the same facility and are said to be in stable condition.

Meanwhile, the Police confirmed that an official investigation has been launched to determine the exact circumstances that led to the incident.
