The wait is finally over as two of Ghana’s glamorous clubs, Kumasi Asante Kotoko and Accra Hearts Of Oak renew their decades long rivalry in the battle for supremacy.
Since Tuesday morning, the Super Clash has stolen the attention in the local media. Writers and broadcasters have constantly reminded readers and listeners of how crucial this fixture is.
Asante Kotoko’s form before the Super Clash
It was four consecutive defeats for Fabulous until they travelled to bogey ground, Nana Agyeman Badu ll Stadium in Dormaa-Ahenkro and secured a moral-boosting 2-0 win over Aduana Stars. Prosper Ogum’s charges continued with a comfortable 2-0 win over Division One side Kwamo Future Stars in the round 64 of the MTN FA Cup. The Porcupine Warriors were in deep pain until they were able to halt the poor run.
Accra Hearts of Oak’s form ahead of the Super Clash
In the Ghana Premier League, Phobia has won three games, drew one and lost in the last five games. In the MTN FA Cup round 64, Accra hearts of Oak smashed Immigration FC 4-0 to boost their confidence ahead of the Super Clash.
Prosper Ogum v Aboubakar Ouattara
Both coaches have endured severe criticisms from their respective fans. Heart of Oak’s Ivorian head coach Aboubakar Ouattara was predicted to be the first manager to lose his job but he has incredibly turned things around. After round two, Phobia was the Bottom-placed side on the table forcing the fans to demand for his sacking. His revival started when he won 2-0 in Tarkwa against Medeama. The club has since not looked back as they have been playing with some swagger.
Prosper Ogum’s Asante Kotoko was unconvincingly winning with just one goal project until they met Legon Cities who exposed them at the University of Ghana Sports Stadium. The Porcupine Warriors could not halt the poor run as they went five games without a win. Fans even stormed Adako Jachie, Asante Kotoko’s training grounds and demanded Prosper Ogum’s resignation. It looks like the fans have put everything aside and are rallying behind the team ahead of their clash against Hearts of Oak.
Aboubakar Ouattara has lost his two Super Clash games after he was beaten 2-0 in Kumasi at the tail end of last season. In the Democracy Cup soon after the season, Prosper Ogum defeated Phobia 2-1 to secure a trip to the USA. Will it be third successive defeats for the Ouattara?
Albert Amoah v Hamza Issah
Albert Amoah has scored 6 goals for Asante Kotoko as he is unquestionably, Asante Kotoko’s threat upfront. In a battle against Kelvin Osei Asibey, it remains unknown who will come on top.
Hamza Issah has already played three games of this fixture since he was introduced in the first team by former manager Martin Koopman earlier last season. In Phobia’s 3-2 defeat in the first leg against Kotoko, Hamza Issah announced his presence by suffocating Kotoko’s defence with his power and pace. A lot of Phobia fans are expecting him to send them to pure football heaven on Sunday afternoon.
Referee
Okoto Mensah is a 30-year-old Ghanaian citizen who was promoted from Access Bank Division One League at the beginning of the season. The teacher, politician and athlete will enjoy his first bite of the Super Clash after former referee Alex Kotey and his charges selected him to handle this big game.
All is set at the Baba Yara Sports Stadium on Sunday afternoon as Ghana’s biggest teams lock horns for three precious points.
The game is scheduled to kick off at 3 pm.
