West Ham United’s Ghanaian forward Mohammed Kudus is known for either sitting on the advertising board with his back to the fans or sitting on a small chair whenever he scores.
On Saturday afternoon at the London Stadium, West Ham United drew 1-1 against Brighton & Hove Albion with Kudus scoring after heading the ball into an empty net. Jared Bowen’s powerful shot was punched away by Verbruggen and Kudus’s header went straight to the roof of the net to make the score line 1-1 after Mats Wieffer had put the visitors ahead in the 41st minute.
After the game, Kudus explained the reason why he abandoned his usual plastic chair for a stool.
“It’s a special stool, a stool from Ghana,” Kudus explained. “With my celebration, I see a lot of competitors and people doing it so I thought, ‘Why not do something different?
Many footballers across the world have been seeing hitting Kudus’ sit-on-the-chair celebrations recently and he decided to raise the bar by using a stool.
“It’s my roots,” he said. “Where I come from, the chiefs and the kings, they sit on stools where are they are from. So I thought it would be nice to share a little bit of life where I am from.”
He added to West Ham’s channels: “This is mine now and no one [else] can do it!”
The stool in Ghana symbolizes royalty, custom and tradition. Mohammed Kudus has become a royal in the West Ham family since his 42m euros move from Ajax Amsterdam in the 2023 summer. His first season was so sensational compared to the current one which happens to be his second.
His goal against Brighton & Hove was his third in 12 Premier League games. Kudus has also provided one assist in the league thus far.
