Imagine being a professional footballer in Ghana and not playing for any of the big clubs. How would you cater for yourself and your family? The GPL could be the worst league in the world regarding player salaries.
Everything about the league is extremely horrible but none comes closer to the salary structure. GPL Players, old players and journalists have complained bitterly about how players are treated in Ghana financially but no one has ever attended to their wail.
Issues of players receiving as low as 500 cedis at the end of the month were shocking and unbelievable but it seems the situation is far worse. Former Asante Kotoko captain, Yussif Chibsah, has shockingly revealed how poorly players are paid in the Ghana Premier League.
“Some players in Ghana earn as low as GHc400 and some as high as GHc18,000”, Yussif Alhassan Chibsah, the former Asante Kotoko skipper disclosed during an interview on Sporty FM.
Clubs like Asante Kotoko, Hearts of Oak and Medeama SC are known to pay their players well with some receiving almost 20k cedis at the end of every month.
The smaller clubs are cash-strapped and have been struggling to financially cater for their players. Receiving 400 cedis at the end of every month is a huge insult to the football profession and authorities must sit up.
Financially Neglecting footballers is disastrous and it can lead to an unwanted series of problems. Players will need a proper salary structure because it makes no sense to pay a professional player 400 cedis at the end of every month.
