Even if you win back-to-back AFCON titles and take the Black Stars to the semi-finals of the FIFA World Cup, you will still be under immense pressure any time the team plays because each of the 35 million Ghanaians is a coach in his or her own way.
Chris Houghton’s arrival was met with cheers, confidence and renewed hope but it turned out to be one of the most boring and embarrassing stints by any manager at the helm of the Black Stars.
The former Brighton & Hove Albion, Newcastle United and Nottingham Forest manager got the Black Stars job with a rich CV.
Many Ghanaians expected good things, but it all came to an end when Ghana failed to qualify for the 2023 AFCON group stage. Ghana failed to beat any of Mozambique, Egypt and Cape Verde with a very good squad.
Performances were shambolic hence leading to Houghton’s sacking.
The former Republic of Ireland and Tottenham Hotspur player has admitted he was aware of the pressure in coaching the Balck Stars.
“I knew the pressure of taking the job when I took it, and if you’re not getting the right results, then you will know about it,” Houghton said.
Chris Houghton, after being sacked from his role as the head coach of Ghana has been jobless.
Ghana has still been struggling after his departure. His replacement Otto Addo failed to qualify Ghana for AFCON 2025 but was lucky to not face the sack.
The Black Stars will host Chad and travel to Morocco to face Madagascar in rounds 5 and 6 of the 2026 FIFA World Cup in the imminent International break.
