In a significant development in the fight against drug trafficking in Ghana’s Volta Region, the Ghana Police Service

has arrested a man suspected of dealing in narcotic substances after an intelligence-led operation in Akatsi.

The suspect, identified as Bukari Yakubu, was apprehended at his residence in the early hours of Saturday, May 10, 2025, at approximately 1:00 a.m.

The operation, which had been in the works for weeks, followed sustained surveillance on Yakubu by the Police Intelligence Unit.

According to police sources, Yakubu had long been on their radar for alleged involvement in the distribution of narcotics within Akatsi and its surrounding communities.

A thorough search of his residence yielded a major breakthrough. Police retrieved 92 slabs of a substance suspected to be Indian hemp, carefully wrapped in yellowish material.

Additionally, two Royal motorbikes—also suspected to have been stolen—were discovered from the premises.

During preliminary interrogation, Yakubu reportedly admitted ownership of both the suspected narcotics and the motorbikes.

The suspect is currently in police custody, assisting investigators with further inquiries into the case.

This arrest marks one of the largest seizures in the Akatsi area in recent months and underscores the growing concern over the distribution networks of illicit drugs in semi-urban and rural parts of the Volta Region.

Authorities suspect that the substance was intended for local distribution, possibly feeding into a broader narcotics network operating discreetly across district lines.

Drug trafficking and related crimes have remained a priority for law enforcement in Ghana, particularly as smaller towns increasingly become hubs for storage and transport.

The Police Service has pledged to intensify its operations and intelligence gathering to disrupt such illegal activities.

Bukari Yakubu is expected to be arraigned before court in the coming days.

Meanwhile, police have confirmed that investigations are ongoing to trace the origins of the suspected Indian hemp and to determine whether other individuals are connected to the operation.
