Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, the New Patriotic Party (NPP) 2024 flagbearer and former Vice-President, has called on party supporters to embrace unity, inclusivity, and national healing as the NPP continues its Thank You Tour following its defeat in the 2024 general elections.

The tour, which took him to the Volta and Oti regions on May 8 and 9 respectively, marks the party’s effort to reconnect with its grassroots, thank supporters, and rebuild momentum after a bruising electoral loss to the National Democratic Congress (NDC).

Addressing a gathering in Hohoe, Volta Region, on Thursday, May 8, Dr Bawumia acknowledged the painful outcome of the December 2024 polls, which saw the NPP losing both the presidency and its parliamentary majority.

However, he said the setback should serve as a catalyst for reform, renewal, and broader engagement with the Ghanaian electorate.

“Our comeback requires having open arms to all,” Dr Bawumia declared, stressing that the NPP must reach beyond its traditional support base.

“We must reach out to every Ghanaian, regardless of region, religion or background, and prove that the NPP is a home for national progress, not narrow interests.”

In that vein, he proposed the creation of regional liaison committees to serve as bridges between the party and local communities.

According to him, these structures would gather feedback from constituents and channel them directly to the party’s national leadership for consideration in future policy formulation.

“These committees will ensure that every voice is heard and that our policies reflect the aspirations of all communities,” he said.

Dr Bawumia also encouraged greater investment in grassroots mobilisation, urging party members to intensify door-to-door engagements and develop stronger ties with their constituencies.

He thanked the people of the Volta Region for their continued resilience and urged them to become ambassadors of the party’s new inclusive vision.

“With unity, humility and open arms, we will transform our setback into a powerful comeback,” he added to rousing applause.
Early Concession
The following day in the Oti Region, Dr Bawumia turned his attention to the controversial post-election period that followed the December 2024 defeat.

Speaking to party loyalists, he defended his decision to concede early despite mounting internal and external pressures to contest the results.

“I chose to concede early. It was a difficult decision, but my foremost concern was to save Ghana from unnecessary tension,” he said.
The former Vice-President emphasized that the priority was to preserve national unity and protect the country from post-election chaos, pointing to the legal challenges and political uncertainty that had briefly gripped the nation.

“By accepting the outcome swiftly, we upheld the rule of law and prevented further polarisation,” he remarked, positioning his concession as a statesmanlike act in the interest of Ghana’s democratic stability.

Dr Bawumia also used the platform to commend NPP supporters for their dedication during the campaign season.

“Your commitment—from door-to-door canvassing to fundraising—has not gone unnoticed. This tour is my chance to say thank you and to reaffirm our shared commitment to Ghana’s progress,” he said.
