Passengers onboard a domestic PassionAir flight from Kumasi to Accra were left shaken on Saturday, June 14, after the aircraft encountered moderate turbulence mid-flight, prompting widespread concern among those onboard and sparking public interest in the airline’s safety protocols during the rainy season.

According to official press release issued by PassionAir on Sunday, June 15, the affected flight—Flight OP 149—experienced weather-related turbulence while en route to the Kotoka International Airport.

Though no injuries were reported, the airline acknowledged that several passengers experienced significant discomfort during the episode.

The incident has been attributed to the increasingly volatile weather conditions affecting Ghana during the peak of the rainy season.

Meteorological experts warn that current atmospheric instability—characterized by heavy rainfall, thunderstorms, high-altitude winds, and rapid temperature changes—has significantly increased the risk of turbulence across the country’s domestic air routes.

In its statement, PassionAir expressed sincere apologies to the affected passengers and emphasized that the safety and comfort of passengers and crew remain its “highest priority.”

The airline assured the public that it is closely coordinating with the Ghana Meteorological Agency and aviation authorities to monitor weather developments and adjust flight plans as needed.

“We expect mostly slight to moderate weather disruptions, though rare instances of severe conditions may occur due to these natural weather changes,” the statement read.

The airline operates regular flights to and from key regional hubs including Kumasi, Tamale, Takoradi, Sunyani, and Wa—all of which are increasingly prone to turbulent airspaces during this season.

Aviation analysts note that while turbulence is a common and often harmless occurrence in commercial aviation, such incidents highlight the importance of clear communication and proactive safety measures during weather-sensitive periods.

Despite the scare, PassionAir has reiterated its commitment to upholding all regulatory safety standards set by the Ghana Civil Aviation Authority (GCAA), adding that efforts are ongoing to minimize operational disruptions while maintaining the integrity of its safety systems.

The airline, one of Ghana’s major domestic carriers, has encouraged passengers to remain calm and continue trusting its services, reassuring them of stringent monitoring and precautionary steps taken to mitigate future incidents.
